Connecticut's Top Runners
Again, with last year's action being greatly curtailed, a clear picture for the upcoming XC season is hard to assemble. We'll just offer up a listing of a few of the top runners, all seniors, who merit special watching.
Gavin Sherry (Conard). He had the fastest 1600m time in the nation last year in spring track, and though a lot of attention will be focused around that sub 4:00 question when T&F resumes, there are also some huge performances looming for the guy who won the Open as a sophomore in 2019 and then won the New England championship before placing 14th out in San Diego at Foot Locker Nationals. And yeah. last year he took Northeast XC and had a tremendous battle with Nick Bendtsen in East Coast.
Aidan Puffer (Manchester). Puffer had another huge track season that included a 2nd behind Gavin Sherry in the Open 3200 after a quieter XC that included a 7th in that massive field at the East Coast XC championship.
Callum Sherry (Conard). Sherry highlighted another strong XC season with a 3rd at the East Coast XC championship behind only Nick Bendtsen and his brother Gavin Sherry. He is also the second fastest returner from the 2019 Open, where he finished 9th as a sophomore.
Walker Beverly (Hall). The Warrior senior finished 3rd behind the Sherry brothers in the CCC Division A race last fall and then put together back-to-back 4:14 times for the 1600m at the Class LL and Open meets.
Jack Martin (Avon). The Falcon senior won the Class MM XC title back in 2019, and last year he had one of the fastest 600m times in the nation and pulled off a trifecta of wins in the 800m-1600m-3200 events in Class MM last June.
Eamon Burke (Xavier). The Falcon senior was the top guy in the SCC championships last fall and was 4th at the Outdoor Nationals in June out in Eugene, OR.
