The New England championships were held at the University of New Hampshire on a windy day that hindered athletes from running fast times. But that didn't prevent athletes from all over the region from having great competitions and some noteworthy performances.
On the boys' side, Manchester senior Jevin Frett redeemed himself after a subpar State Open. The defending State Open champion took 5th in the race on Monday after straining his hip flexor during the Class LL meet. He came back on Saturday and ran his fastest 400m of the season with a 48.62.
To cap off his brilliant meet, Frett got his revenge on Danbury who has defeated Manchester in two close races in as many weeks in the 4 x 400m. Frett joined Willy Joyner, Shawn Akomeah and Class LL 800m champion Joe Pearl to win the title with a time of 3:21.85.
In a replay of the State Open, Ken Little of Derby took it out hard in the 800m and the same three Connecticut runners finished in the same order as Monday. Little ran about a second slower than he did at the State Open and Hall junior Miller Anderson came on strong the last 100m to move to second but couldn't quite catch Derby's captain. Senior Ian Barlett of Ludlowe took 4th and UConn signee Joe Pearl took 5th in 1:54.27.
Connecticut dominated the 1600m taking the top three places. Staples' William Landowne crossed the line in 4:14.58 with Windham senior Alex Korczynski moving up two places from his Open performance to finish less than an arm's length behind in 4:14.70. Alexander Mocarski of Fairfield Warde was only a quarter second back in 4:14.96 to complete the sweep.
The ladies from the Nutmeg state fared much better than their male counterparts winning 12 of the 18 events.
Sophomore Terry Miller of Bulkeley took home two gold medals winning the 100m in 11.97 and the 200m into a strong headwind finishing in 24.42.
Jillian Mars of Bloomfield took advantage of top seed Carly Sweirbut pulling out of the meet due to a slight strain of her hamstring to win her first New England title. The senior broke the tape in a time of 56.25.
Danbury's Lauren Moore survived a tough challenge from New England indoor mile champion Julia Robitaille from Manchester West in New Hampshire. The two juniors battled down the entire home stretch with Moore coming out on top with a time of 4:59.68 only .05 ahead of second place.
Elizabeth Stockman of Rocky Hill wanted revenge from her 2nd place finish to freshman Kate Wiser of Pomperaug on Monday. The sophomore took it out at a breakneck pace, going through the 800m at 5- minute mile pace. While she wasn't able to hold that pace up, no one else was either and Stockman continued on to her first New England championship in 10:44.99 with Wiser fading to fifth.
Connecticut hurdlers took both the short and long hurdle events. Senior Katherine Jacobs of Northwest Catholic glided to a 14.84 time in the 100HH with Kalli'Ana Botelho of Griswold moving into the lead with two hurdles to go and finished in 44.19, one of the few personal records of the day.
Connecticut still wasn't done with the winner's circle. Bloomfield's team of Jahleah Harris, Jahlia Banton, Mars and Jayden Gibson added another plaque to the team's trophy case winning the 4 x 400m in 3:57.46
The Southington duo of Megan Biscoglio and Amanda Howe won the pole vault and discus respectively as they did at the State Open. The University of Connecticut bound Biscoglio cleared 12'3 on her 3rd attempt and Howe, who has committed to the University of Iowa defended her discus title, throwing 141'9 and took 4th in the shot put with a 40'11.5.
Rachel Fleischer of Derby has swept all the major championships meets after taking the NVL, Class S, State Open and now New England triple jump titles. Her jump of 38'11.5 now ranks her 82nd in the US.
Finally, there is the Greenwich quartet of Kate Ragone, Hetty McMillan, Zoe Harris and Emily Philippides who gave up individual goals to come together and win the New England championship 4 x 800m in 9:17.42. The All American Philippides still returned later in the day to finish a very close 2nd in the 800m and anchored the 4 x 400m to a 4th place finish.

England honors by virtue of their top six finish.
