Marshfield’s DiPietro Sets School Record In Winning High Jump Jun 13, 2013

Marshfield’s Ellen DiPietro won the girls’ high jump title (5 feet 8 inches), and BC High’s Jordan Samuels captured the boys’ triple jump (47-7) at Saturday’s New England track and field championships in New Britain, Conn. DiPietro, a junior, set a new school record and completed a sterling postseason run that saw her capture high-jump crowns at the Atlantic Coast League meet (5-61/2), the Div. 2 state meet (5-6) and the All-State meet (5-6).

A short time after running the anchor leg on her school’s winning 4x800-meter relay squad, Barrington High junior Abby Livingston made her way over to the awards’ tent. Before making it to the tent, she knelt on the ground in total exhaustion. It was a place she remained for close to 10 minutes. That’s what happens when you pour your heart into a race, using every bit of energy (and more) to earn a victory.

 Barrington High coach Scott Turgeon figured his 4x800-meter relay team had a good chance at winning a New England title. What he didn’t expect, at least not yet, was the leg turned in by his anchor, junior Abby Livingston.Trailing fellow Rhode Island rival La Salle Academy by three seconds after the third leg, Livingston blitzed her two laps in 2 minutes, 8 seconds to lift the Eagles to the overall crown at Saturday’s New England Championship. The quartet of freshman Julia Zitzman, junior Julianna Portelli, junior Megan Verner-Crist and Livingston combined for a state and meet record of 9:05.49. La Salle also dipped under the existing NE mark of 9:12.16 with a runner-up time of 9:06.22.

Brian Sommers wanted to take full advantage of his one event at Saturday's 68th New England Track Championships and give the competition a world of hurt in the process. With no long jump and only the 400-meter dash on his schedule,the Acton-Boxboro senior attacked the event harder than he ever has. Sommers roared out from the start against a deep, frightenly tough field and barreled down the final straightway to shatter his personal best and take first in 48.31 seconds, just ahead of Zachary Andrews (48.48) of New Britain, CT.

Bell 58-10 & Hall 11.69 win@ New Englands Derek Veilleux Jun 8, 2013

Kate Hall wins her first outdoor New England title as she blew away the field in the 100m with a wind legal 11.69, the time is a meet record. Hall was the runner-up in the long jump 19-0 3/4, breaking her Maine all-time best. Jared Bell of Deering won the shot put with a personal best 58-10. Nick Danner of Waterville was the runner-up in the javelin with a 187-2 effort.

For most high school athletes in the New England region, the track and field season came to an official close this past weekend with their respective state championships. For a selected few, there’s at least one (and possibly two) still left on the slate. It all begins on Saturday with the 68th annual New England Championships, to be held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, Conn.
