Ancient Record Falls at NVL Meet

BEACON FALLS -- Records, as they say, are meant ... well, you don't need me to say it. But in the Naugatuck Valley League, there are some records that are darn near ageless. Tuesday at Woodland High, one of those old-time records was broken, but another lives on.

Wolcott's Joe Gioielli smoked the field in the 800 meters, winning the event by more than seven seconds, and his time of 1:56.22 broke an NVL record that had stood since 1983. Torrington's Lee Davidson ran a 1:57 flat 29 years ago. Until Tuesday, no NVL boy had gone faster.

The other ancient mark is in the discus. Ansonia's Jack Hunt tossed the disc 155 feet, 4 inches way the heck back in 1965. Forty-seven years later, no one has done it better.
