Connecticut Outdoors: May 4th-May 10th Top Performers and Breakthroughs
Connecticut athletes continued to produce elite performances across invitationals, league meets, and dual meet competition from May 4 through May 10. The week featured nationally competitive sprint marks, dominant hurdle racing, major distance breakthroughs, and several standout field event performances as athletes across the state continued building momentum deeper into the outdoor season. Meets such as the Glenn D. Loucks Games, the 8th CT Distance Festival, and multiple conference showdowns produced some of the strongest marks seen this spring.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint events were highlighted by another outstanding week from Brenan McCabe (Immaculate High School), who captured the 400 meters at the Loucks Games in New York in 47.65 against a loaded 67-athlete field. McCabe continues to establish himself among Connecticut's premier 400m runners this spring after another major invitational victory.
Lauren Kropo (Naugatuck High School) delivered the fastest girls 100-meter performance of the week in Connecticut, running 11.84 to win at Kennedy at Naugatuck. The performance came against a field of 118 athletes and reinforced her standing among the state's elite sprinters.
Bloomfield teammates Saphyr Brown (Bloomfield High School) and Jahniya Barclay (Bloomfield High School) also turned in standout sprint performances. Barclay defeated Brown head-to-head in the 200 meters at Bristol Central @ Bloomfield, winning in 24.70, while Brown still posted an impressive 25.04 and added a third-place finish at the Loucks Games in the long jump with a leap of 19-0.75.
On the boys side, Davian Johnson (East Hartford High School) produced one of the nation's top hurdle performances of the week, winning the 110-meter hurdles at the Loucks Games in 13.58 against a 53-athlete field that included several of the region's top hurdlers.
Another major hurdles performance came from Javonni Reynolds (Bloomfield High School), who clocked 37.42 in the 300-meter hurdles at Bristol Central vs Bloomfield, establishing himself as the top junior in Connecticut in the event. Reynolds also ran 14.25 in the 110 hurdles at the Loucks Games to move to #2 among Connecticut juniors.
Several athletes delivered major breakthroughs during the week. Evan Kane (Coginchaug Regional High School) continued his rapid sprint development with a breakthrough 22.45 in the 200 meters at Shoreline Mega Meet #2, improving more than three seconds from his previous best.
In the hurdles, Jake Bedard (Naugatuck High School) produced a major leap in the 300-meter hurdles, lowering his best from 56.64 to 47.34 at Kennedy at Naugatuck. Ayana Gandhi (Staples High School) also emerged with one of the top girls hurdles breakthroughs of the week, improving from 1:06.76 to 55.11 in the 300 hurdles while also dropping nearly three seconds in the 100 hurdles with a 23.47 performance.
Additional sprint breakthroughs came from Aiden Williams (Windham Technical High School), who cut more than 16 seconds off his previous 400-meter best with a 1:01.40 performance, and Thomas Donohue (Wethersfield High School), who improved significantly in both the 100 hurdles and 400 meters during the same meet.
Distance
The distance events featured another elite showing from James Millare (Moanalua High School), who dominated the middle distances at the OIA Varsity Eastern Division Track Championships with victories in both the 800 meters (1:56.69) and 1500 meters (4:04.02).
On the girls side, Sarah Rochester (Taft School) continued her outstanding season with a dominant sprint-distance range double, winning the 400 meters in 55.99 and the 200 meters in 26.15 at the Taft multi-team meet.
The boys distance scene also saw major breakthroughs. Madden Rockwell (East Granby High School) dropped an incredible 45 seconds in the 800 meters, running 2:14.00 at East Granby @ Ellington. Nicholas Terzi (Trumbull High School) also delivered a major leap with a 2:17.60 performance.
At the longer distances, Julian Krotmeier (Immaculate High School) cut nearly two minutes off his previous 3200-meter best, running 11:28.04 at the SWC Meet @ Brookfield. Jack Katkocin (New Fairfield High School) also produced a massive improvement with a 12:37.21 performance.
The girls distance events featured several substantial breakthroughs as well. Brooke Gardner (Lewis Mills High School) dropped more than three and a half minutes in the 3200 meters, running 13:05.00 at Bristol Eastern @ Lewis Mills. Lilianna Fellone (New Fairfield High School) also had a huge week, improving dramatically in both the 800 meters and 3200 meters, including a 13:00.37 effort in the latter.
At the CT Distance Festival, Keira Scroggins (Simsbury High School) lowered her mile best by more than a minute with a 5:37.15 performance, while Henry Mazur (Hall High School) broke through with a 4:55.62 mile on the boys side after previously holding a best above six minutes.
Jumps
The jumps were highlighted by a major performance from Akeem Wright Jr (Stratford High School), who soared 23-8.75 to win the long jump at the SWC meet at New Milford. The jump moved him to #2 among Connecticut juniors this season.
On the girls side, Saphyr Brown (Bloomfield High School) added another strong long jump series to her season resume with a third-place finish at the Glenn D. Loucks Games at 19-0.75.
Several jumpers also delivered major improvements throughout the week. Bryson Stevens (New Milford High School) posted one of the biggest triple jump breakthroughs statewide, improving from 39-3 to 44-5.5 at the SWC Meet @ New Milford.
David Tellerico Jr (Cheshire High School) also made a substantial leap in the triple jump, improving nearly eight feet to 36-6.25 at the 10th Froshmore Invitational.
In the high jump, James Jones (Platt High School) cleared 6-2 after previously holding a best of 5-6, while Davian Gonzalez (Naugatuck High School) improved to 6-0 at the Froshmore Invitational.
For the girls, Kayla Elizondo (Danbury High School) improved more than three feet in the long jump with a 14-4.5 effort, while Hailey Beebe (Enfield High School) reached 15-3 after a substantial personal best improvement.
The pole vault also featured notable gains from Victor Velez (Danbury High School) and Noah Campbell (Plainville High School), who both improved to 11-0. On the girls side, Elena Roberts (Ridgefield High School) improved to 6-6, while Kate Duggan (Joel Barlow High School) cleared 9-0.
Throws
The throws were led by another huge performance from Cameron Saunders (Hamden High School), who launched the shot put 58-9.75 for second place at the Loucks Games against one of the strongest fields of the season. Saunders also won the discus at the Lyman Hall vs Amity & Hamden meet with a throw of 141-3.
On the girls side, Alexandra Lockwood (Fairfield Ludlowe) continued her dominant season by sweeping both throwing events at Central at Ludlowe, winning the shot put with a 42-4.5 mark and the discus at 112-10.
Several athletes also recorded major throwing breakthroughs during the week. Cristian Harvey (New Fairfield High School) improved more than 30 feet in the discus with a 142-2 performance at the SWC Meet @ Masuk, while Logan Murray (Avon High School) delivered one of the largest discus improvements of the week, jumping from 5-7 to 76-11.
In the shot put, Cole Cheney (Plainfield High School) surpassed the 40-foot barrier after a nearly 10-foot improvement.
The girls throws also featured major progress from Aubriana Desorbo (East Windsor High School), who added over 30 feet in the discus to reach 85-7, and Alina Mahon (New Milford High School), who improved nearly 40 feet in the javelin with an 82-6 throw.
