If you want to follow the battle for the boys SCC championships, you should keep your eyes on the field events. If you only watch the track, you will see Hillhouse rack up the points in multiple events. Led by the state leader in the 400m, Deshaune Poole, the Academics will score all their points on the oval.
But defending champion Daniel Hand High School will be right up in the standings scoring a lot of 5th-8ths on the track, but it is off the track where they will really set themselves apart. Mike Burchell is the top seed in the shot put and discus and sophomore Isaiah McNeilly is favored to win the javelin.
Guilford's points will be much more obvious to the causal fan because their point will come in the distance events. Meredith Bloss and Jacqueline Guerra are the top two seeds in the 1600m and 3200m and the duo could also contribute points to the 4 x 800m.
In other events cross country All American Drew Thompson of Fairfield Prep will be taking his last laps around the track against his SCC brothers. The Dartmouth committed athlete will have his hands full with some up and coming runners who will try to establish a name for themselves. Amity junior has already run a state leading time of 15:09 in the 5000m and has been improving by leaps and bounds the past few weeks. And then there is Branford junior Marzio Mastroianni who defeated Thompson last week in the SCC Western Sectional meet in the 1600m and is looking to do the same this week.
New Balance Indoor National champion Dyshon Vaughn has been quiet this season, only competing in SCC dual meets. But he showed he still has pop in his legs when he jumped 24'1.5 at his sectional meet last week.
Defending State Open 400m champion Aisha Gay of Hamden will have her hands full with top seeded Boyd in the 400m and Erica Marriott who is only a step behind in the 200m. North Haven's Marriott is also the defending champion in the long jump and will be looking to add to her collection of medal.
