The final day of the New Balance Nationals on Sunday saw two Connecticut relay squads earn gold medals in their respective Championship races.
In the last race of the meet, the Distance Medley Relay, the Ridgefield HIgh foursome of Ian Mickool, Jeffery Storm, Kenny Day and Gabe Altopp edged York (IL) with a nation No. 4 of 10:02.34. Mickool led off the winning squad with a 3:08.296 for his 1,200m leg. Storm was timed in 50.164 for his 400m leg and Day hit 1:57.11 for 800m. The highlight of the race came from Altopp, who erased a three-second lead by York on the final leg with a 4:06.776 for his 1,600m split. Tolland's quartet of Katherine DeLoreto, Karissa Laramie, Julia Sprout and Caitlin Swanson finished fourth in the girls' DMR with a time of 11:51.52.
The other win for the Nutmeg State came from Wethersfield, which won a thrilling battle in the 800m Sprint Medley Relay, combining for a time of 1:30.80. In the race, just .70 of a second separated the top three teams.In the girls' event, Windsor finished as a runner-up to Florida's South Dade with a time of 1:42.96.
