Two-time defending state titlist Tolland High was in championship form on Saturday.
Behind a 1-2-4 finish, the Tigers captured the featured Championship Race at the Wickham Park Invitational. Junior Katherine DeLoreto posted the fastest time of the afternoon by winning the individual title with a time of 18 minutes, 45 seconds for the challenging five-kilometer layout. Mercy's Mackenzie Pias took runner-up honors with a time of 19:03. Tolland took the next two placements with Brigid Selfors taking third (19:10) and Caitlin Swanson placing fourth (19:12). The Tigers scored 54 points for their title.Finishing second was Glastonbury with 71 points.
Staples brought home the team plaque in the boys' Championship Race, defeating second-place East Greenwich, R.I., 65-94. Cheshire sophomore Brendan Murray, a third-place finisher at last year's meet, claimed the top prize with a 15:56 clocking. Sam Toolin, a freshman from North Kingstown, R.I., was second at 16:14. South Windsor's Michael Stoker was third in 16:24. Leading the way for Staples was Zakeer Ahmed (seventh, 16:41) and Chase Gornbein (eighth, 16:41).
