Connecticut Distance Spotlight: Stars, Depth, and Breakout Talent Enter Outdoor Season
The distance events in Connecticut are shaping up to be some of the most competitive disciplines of the outdoor season. With a large group of returning standouts and several athletes who built serious momentum during the indoor campaign, the battles from the 800 meters through the 3200 meters could produce some of the state's most exciting races this spring.
Boys Title Contenders
A few returning athletes enter the season with credentials that immediately place them among the top contenders across multiple distance events.
Perhaps most notably, Nathan Lee (Brunswick School) stands out as the top returning long-distance runner in the state. Lee ran 8:52.67 in the 3200 meters outdoors last spring, the fastest returning mark in Connecticut, and followed that performance with a 9:04.22 indoor 3200 this winter. His versatility also extends to shorter distances, as he ran 4:08.54 in the mile last outdoor season.
In terms of more middle-distance specialists, Sam Leone (East Lyme High School) and Alexander Medina (Hamden High School) return as two of the most proven competitors. Leone ran 4:12.71 in the 1600 outdoors last year and carried strong form into the indoor season with a 2:28.79 state-leading 1000 meters and a 4:17.71 1600. Medina, meanwhile, ran 1:51.68 in the 800 outdoors and 2:29.67 indoors in the 1000, establishing himself as one of the state's premier 800-1600 runners.
Girls Title Contenders
Few athletes in the state possess range like Chase Gilbert (Old Lyme High School). Gilbert ran 2:11.38 in the 800, 4:46.46 in the 1600, and 10:48.36 in the 3200 outdoors last year, and continued her success indoors by winning the State Open 1600 in 4:55.13.
But especially in the distances under 1600, Gilbert will have her hands full with Sarah Roberts (Mercy High School), who ran 2:09.58 in the 800 outdoors last season and added a State Open indoor title in the 1000 meters (2:53.32) this winter. Both athletes have proven they can win state championships and should once again play major roles in Connecticut's middle-distance races.
Boys Breakout Candidates
Tycen LaBelle (Griswold High School) built tremendous momentum by winning the State Open indoor 3200 in 9:16.29, elevating his status among the state's top distance runners heading into outdoor.
Another runner trending upward is Drew Sharron (Darien High School), who captured the Class LL indoor 1600 title in 4:18.59 and showed the ability to compete with the state's best milers in the process.
Meanwhile, Aidan Nelson (Ridgefield High School) and Ryan Monohan (New Canaan High School) both had impressive indoor seasons in the 1000 and 1600, positioning them as potential breakout threats once outdoor racing begins.
Girls Breakout Candidates
Alexandra Morgan (Fairfield Warde) looks poised to cement her status as one of the state's best milers after posting a 4:58.93 outdoor 1600 last year and a 2:56.07 indoor 1000 this season. Right there with Morgan, Maya Donzella (Windsor High School) continues to improve after running 4:59.27 in the 1600 outdoors and 5:09.97 indoors.
Another athlete trending upward is Hazel DeLucia (Lyman Memorial High School), who posted big PRs indoors in both the 1600 (5:06.47) and 3200 (10:50.62).
Boys Deepest Teams to Watch
Greenwich High School returns one of the deepest distance groups in the state. Ryan Newcomb (Greenwich High School) ran 1:54.63 in the 800 outdoors last year and continued his momentum indoors with strong performances in the mile and 3200. Teammates Benjamin Hayes (Greenwich High School) and Matteo Chiesara (Greenwich High School) also posted competitive indoor marks that could translate to strong outdoor performances.
Likewise, Fairfield Warde has impressive depth with athletes like Hudson Schunk (Fairfield Warde) and Maximillian Mocarski (Fairfield Warde) making their presence felt across multiple distance leaderboards.
Girls Deepest Teams to Watch
Once again, Greenwich High School appears to have significant depth in the distance events. Along with Sophie Passalacqua the Cardinals return athletes like Eliana Daplyn (Greenwich High School) and Gemma Hardwick (Greenwich High School) who have both posted strong 800-meter performances.
Mercy High School also returns a strong group led by Sarah Roberts, with teammates Cora Wasiolek and Calista Nephew adding additional depth in the distance events.
Boys Underclassmen to Watch
While many of the top returning marks belong to upperclassmen, several younger runners are already making their presence felt. Nolan O'Connor (Xavier High School) and James Hayes (Greenwich High School) have already posted competitive 3200 marks early in their high school careers, and based on indoor results, look ready to build on that momentum this spring.
Girls Underclassmen to Watch
One of the most exciting distance prospects in the state is Lauren Parrett (Glastonbury High School). The young standout ran 10:46.19 in the outdoor 3200 last year before lowering her PR to 10:40.36 indoors, where she captured the State Open title.
Several other underclassmen to expect strong outdoor seasons from include Sophie Passalacqua (Greenwich High School), who ran 4:58.73 indoors in the 1600 and 10:47.17 in the 3200, Cora Wasiolek (Mercy High School), and Oriana Pescatello (Norwich Free Academy).
Outlook
With experienced returners, rising underclassmen, and plenty of teams boasting impressive depth, the distance races across Connecticut this spring should provide some of the most competitive and exciting matchups of the outdoor season.
