Gary Moore Jr Shatters Mel Taylor's 53-Year-Old Shot Put SR

Gary Moore Jr. of Hillhouse had come oh so close to breaking the CT state record so many times this season. That mark of 63 feet 3 1/2 inches (as officially reported, maybe they rounded down later for CIAC record books), set by Hartford Public's Mel Taylor almost 53 years ago on March 18, 1969 at the Class A Eastern Sectionals at UConn, had defied all challengers for a long time.

Moore was just a little ways short of the SR many times this season, and at the SCC championship last weekend, he threw 63-2 on his second attempt to come even more agonizingly close, fouling on his final two attempts while maybe going for just a little bit more.

But at the Class L championship on Saturday morning on his second attempt, Moore shattered the Taylor's record with a throw that landed about ten inches further out at 64-1.25. His fifth throw was also well beyond the old mark at 63-10.

Moore has the CIAC Open next weekend plus other opportunities at New England and maybe both Nationals (held at Nike at Ocean Breeze and at New Balance at the Armory on the same weekend from 3/11 to 3/13) to push out the indoor SR. He states that 65 feet is the next milestone for him, and then we'ill see how far he goes from there. Once the wall is broken, sometimes a big surge comes. It will be fun to watch.
