CIAC Class Championships Recap

New Britain CT - As usual, the CIAC Class championship action featured some mind-boggling efforts and a few close team battles, mainly on the girls' side. While the five boys' champions had an average winning margin of 22.6 led by Derby in Class S at 36 and Haddam-Killingworth in Class M, the girls' champs' average was 7.5, as both Weston in Class M and East Hampton in Class S won by 1.5 and Hillhouse took a 3.5 point victory in Class MM.

Each of the five championships had at least one meet record broken as thirteen hallowed marks went down and sixteen athletes bettered the old standard, half of them being long distance runners. On the girls' side, Alanna Smith broke the LL 200m mark, Anna Keeley and Mari Noble both went under the old LL 1600m mark, Chloe Scrimgeour destroyed the L 3200 mark, Mariella Schweitzer claimed the new MM 300m hurdles record, Leah Moore set the MM shot put mark, Shea Greene established a new M javelin mark, and Jessica Starr got the S 300m hurdles record. On the boys' side, Gavin Sherry doubled up on the L 1600m and 3200m records, Gary Moore Jr. set a new L discus mark, Patrick Oatman bested and Matthew Bigelow tied the old MM pole vault mark, and Nick Bendtsen doubled up on the M 1600m and 3200m marks while Matthew Jennings joined him in bettering the 1600m standard.

Athletes were fighting for every point in the team battles, and a few managed to triple up for 30 points individually while likely sacrificing a bit on record marks. Mallory Malz got an unusual PV-LJ-TJ triple in Class LL, Kisha Francois got a somewhat more familiar 100m-200m-LJ triple in Class MM, Jack Martin put together an 800m-1600m-3200m triple in Class MM, and Sam Menders got the HJ-LJ-TJ trifecta in Class MM.

Classic action, and everyone had a lot of fun. The State Open should be a blast.
