With the winter vacations over many teams are into the heart of their seasons. Teams from all over the state came to the Southern Connecticut Conferences Coaches Invitational at Floyd Little Athletic Center to face some of the best athletes in Connecticut and get qualifying performances for the end of the season championships. Some athletes got more than that and came home with school records and even nationally ranked times.
The SCC coaches awarded The Track Performer of the Meet to Alexander Korczysnki of Windham. The senior who has committed to Northeastern University in Boston, came into the meet with a game plan to "let it go in the 1000m and target a respectable time in the 3200m" according to his coach James Thompson. What turned out to be one of the best races of the day, Korcynski was pushed the entire way by Weston's Tim Lautenback and Tyler Rubush of Trumbull. Korczysnki broke the tape with a Windham school record of 3:31.98 and Lautenback was less than ½ second back. Both made the New Balance Indoor Emerging Elite standard and are ranked 10th and 12th respectfully in the US.
Korczynski, who was last year's State Open champion in the 1600m, came back and went above his normal distance to try for a fast time in the 3200m. He faced Cheshire's Brendan Murray who was 2nd at the cross-country State Open championship and has a 9:06 3200m to his credit. The Windham senior plays soccer in the fall which doesn't allow him to build a distance base that most distance runners need. With both of them only inches apart most of the way, Korczynski used his superior mile speed and came away with another school record, running 9:25.41 with Murray just two seconds back.
Records were made to be broken and Danbury's sprint medley did just that with a new meet record of 3:37.67. The old record of 3:39.68 was anchored by Wilbur Cross' Cas Loxsom who has since gone on to a profession career and broke the world record in the 600m last winter. The Danbury team made up of Chris Cledera, Malachi Lorick Sean-Michael Parkinson and Malcolm Going just missed their goal of making the NBIN championship standard of 3:37.00 but still managed to come away with an Emerging Elite qualifying performance and the 9th best time in the country.
Southington's Zach Burleigh is now the 5th CT athlete over 13'6 in the pole vault this winter and tied his school record in the process. Nicholas Petruzzelli of Notre Dame West Haven also cleared 13'6, but it took him two attempts with Burleigh getting it on his first. With his win, the SCC Coaches presented Burleigh with the trophy for Field Event Performer of the meet to match his classmate Megan Bisiglio's award for winning the girl's vault earlier in the day.
In the 55HH, junior Edward Williams of Sacred Heart Academy in Waterbury, continued his undefeated season in the event with a new personal record and state leading time of 7.61. Williams was State Open champion in the 110HH last spring and is looking to knock off .07 seconds to punch his ticket to Nationals this winter.
While there are plenty of fast athletes in other sports, it usually takes them a while to become "track fast". Erik Lorent of Shelton came out for indoor track to stay in shape for soccer. Well, he quickly become an impact performer on the indoor oval along to go along with his talent on the outdoor pitch. He has won both 55m races he has entered with state leading times and lowered his PR to a 6.55 with his victory on Saturday.
In a very tight battle for the team title, Staples came away with a one- point win over Glastonbury 37-36. The Wreckers got most of their points from Chet Ellis' 6'4 win in the high jump and 15 more points from the three longer relays. Add in a third place for Ben Seiple in the 3200m and Hall of Fame Coach Laddie Lawrence will have another trophy to display in his track office on Monday.
