Girls Leader Board is Shaken Up at Greater Hartford Invite

The track and field season is really beginning to take shape after this weekend's performances at the Greater Hartford Invite, held at Simsbury High School.

Amy-erin Zadroga of Tollandhas been tearing up the pole vault runways in Connecticut and has rarely been beaten by an in state athlete these past four years.  It took a meet record jump of 11'9 by Southington junior  Megan Biscoglio to give the defending State Open champion one of her few losses.  Biscoglio, who jumped 12'0 in a dual meet earlier this week, qualified for Emerging Elite Nationals and is looking forward to clearing 12'4 to make the championship section.

But Zadroga didn't leave the meet disappointed as she set a meet record in the javelin with a state leading throw of 127'0 which qualifies her for nationals in her secondary event.

Katherine Deloreto of Tolland has earned more medals in the distance events than any conquering general in the history of the world. Well the Boston College bound senior picked up another one with her win in the 1600m on Saturday with a state leading time of 5:02.92.  She was challenged by junior Erin McGill, who ran a PR of 5:04.31.

Another PR was set by All New England runner Elizabeth McMahon of Conard High School in the 400m. The junior took it out hard and made up the stagger on the back straightaway and then continued to pull away on the home stretch.  Her time of 56.88, is not only a personal record by over a second, she also takes over as the state leader in the event.

New Milford's Craig Shanahan tied his own state leading throw when his javelin landed 174'5 from the toe board.  The senior didn't even make the State Open last year and now he is on of the favorites to win it this year.

The boys 3200m was won in 9:38.65 by ECC cross country champion Brandon Mehlinger of Norwich Free Academy.  But the field was led the entire way until the last 200m by unknown Pomperaug junior Robbie Moore who ran a 40 second personal record to finish in 9:41.35.  This gives the 8th fastest time in the state  to the runner who takes the winter off to swim for his high school.

In the girls 3200m Ludlowe's Sarah Leatherwood set a blistering pace in her quest to break 10:50 but when she began to falter, Bridgid Selfors took over to set an outdoor PR of 10:57.81.  This is the fourth time the Mercy senior has broken 11 minutes and the first CT runner this season to break that barrier.

When you are a member of a very strong relay team, your performances are often only known to coaches and teammates who know your splits.  Brianna Auray has been Fairfield Ludlowe's anchor in their state leading 4 x 800m and helped the team qualify for indoor nationals this past March.

Well, she was finally given the go ahead to run the 800m fresh and she took advantage of the opportunity. She went out hard from the gun and came through the 400m in about 65 seconds.  She continued her torrid pace and finished in a new personal record of 2:14.31, which is the 3rd best time in the state this season.

Next big meet on the agenda will be the Danbury Dream Invitational.  Look for full CT.Milesplit coverage this week.
