Connecticut athletes got off to a good start during Day 1 of the NY Relays on Friday.
The Nutmeg State placed four in the top six in the boys' 3,200-meter run with Ridgefield High senior Austin Gilbert earning the individual title. Gilbert edged Rhode Island's Tommy Sommer of East Greenwich with a winning time of 9 minutes, 21.47 seconds. Sommer was second at 9:21.79. Finishing third was Cory Mullins of Danbury with a time of 9:25.55. Taking the next three slots was Classical (RI) junior Joe Murphy (fourth, 9:33.03) and Ridgefield teammates Clint Corso (fifth, 9:34.38) and Kristian Soogard (9:35.23).
Danbury's Eric Waterman was second in the 2,000m steeplchase with a 6:19.86 clocking.
