More Conference Wrap Ups

ECC- Norwich Free Academy swept the boys and girls titles at the Eastern Connecticut championships for the second straight year with Stonington taking the runner up spots in both meets.

The jumps were a strong area for the Wildcats as Brenden Sholes cleared 6'4 in the high jump and Jahiem Spruill won the long jump (22-5).  Soles also took third in the long jump and Spruill added a second place finish in the triple jump and a third in the high jump, while Sholes was also third in the long jump.  Backing them up were sophomore Justin Costick who took 3rd in the triple with senior Armstrong Alcius taking 5th in the high jump and 4th in the triple.  Adding to the jumps total were Chris Weir and Jacob Bazinet going 3- 6 in the pole vault.  This gave NFA for a grand total of 65 of their 131 points in the four events.

To win a championship, it certainly helps when you score five of the top seven spot in one event, which is what the NFA girls did in the pole vault.  Paige Martin won with a jump of 10-6 and Madison Martin was 2nd in 10-0 with Angela Chong third in 9-6.  Add in a 5th and a 7th place finish and that gave the champions 29 of the possible 31 points in the event.

Ally Lewis also had a big day tying the meet record in the high jump with a state leading jump of 5'8.  Lewis also set a PR in the long jump of 17-7.5, good for 2nd and also placed 2nd in the 100m.

The meet, which was postponed from Saturday to Wednesday highlighted several other record breaking performances.  Stonington's boys 4 x 400m team of Joey Hinckley, Chase Flynn, Blake Edwards, Rhys Hammond broke NFA's 2013 mark running 3:25.33, which is the 6th fastest time in the state this season.

Fitch's girls 4 x 100m of Madison Powe, Janaya Burley, Lily Johnson and Abigail Rogers
broke  Ledyard's seven year old mark by .02, crossing the line in 49.56, the fifth fastest time in Connecticut this year.

While not a meet record, Stonington's Cameron Whalen set a school record and the fastest time in the state in the 110HH stopping the clock in 14.56.  The Central Connecticut signee, also won the 300IH and took 2nd in the 100m.
