Ashley Bell helped the 4 x 400 meter relay team finish in fifth place at the Metropolitan Championships this weekend.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Freshman distance runner, Sarah Vaughan (Hamden, Conn.), and thrower, Samantha Spindel (Brewster, N.Y.), of the Southern Connecticut State University women's outdoor track and field team claimed top honors in their respective events on the final day of the Metropolitan Championships held in New Brunswick, N.J. Vaughan ran a time of 38:10.01 in the 10,000 meters, while Spindel threw the hammer 53.52 meters.

Titilayo Vanriel (Hartford, Conn.) claimed third with a time of 2:17.45 in the 800 meters.

The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Rachel Van Gilder (Enfield, Conn.), Nyoshee Lowry (Danbury, Conn.), Raysa Florentino (Groton, Conn.), and anchor Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) were fifth with a time of 3:57.86.Bell finished sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.10.

Kimberly Johnson (Lisbon, Conn.) was seventh in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.20 and eighth in the high jump clearing a height of 1.50 meters.

Elizabeth Bashir (Colchester, Conn.) and Aubrey Dowding (Warwick, R.I.) were seventh and eighth in the shot put with tosses of 11.96 and 11.85 meters, respectively. Dowding also finished third in the javelin throw with a toss of 38.90 meters.

The Owls will be back in action next weekend for the Larry Ellis Invitational held on April 19-20.
