Ashley Bell finished first in both the 55 and 200 meter events today at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

BOSTON, Mass. - Co-captains, Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Kimberly Johnson (Lisbon, Conn.), of the No. 12 Nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's indoor track and field team helped led the Owls to a third place overall finish at the at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships held today in Boston, Mass. Two student athletes were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Major Award Winners. Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) was named Female Rookie of the Year for multiple first place finishes in the pole vault, while Brittany Brown (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was named Female Athlete of the Year for claiming top individual marks in four events inclduing: 60 hurdles, indoor pentathlon, long jump, and high jump.

It is only fitting to have both the Owls' captains claims first place in their respective event. Bell claimed first in both the 55 meters and 200 meters event including NCAA provisional marks in both. She managed a time of 7.20 in the 55 meters and 25.12 in the 200 meters. Johnson claimed first and tied fellow teammate Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) with a height cleared of 3.65 meters to claim a NCAA provisional mark and improve upon Johnson's previous meet record of 3.50 meters recorded at the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Johnson also finished second in the high jump with a height cleared of 1.62 meters.



Jaclyn Sullivan (Lisbon, Conn.) was third in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:03.01.


Elizabeth Bashir (Colchester, Conn.) claimed third in the shot put tying her teammate Aubrey Dowding (Warwick, R.I.) with a heave of 12.23 meters.

Samantha Spindel (Brewster, N.Y.) paced the Owls in the weight throw leading her teammates to a third, fourth, and fifth effort. She managed a toss of 14.43 meters, while Julianna Williamson (Milford, Conn.) and Bashir followed suit with heaves of 13.30 and 13.11 meters, respectively.

Sophomore Titilayo Vanriel (Hartford, Conn.) claimed fourth in the 800 meters and managed a NCAA provisional mark of 2:15.99. Chloe Ashcroft (Shelton, Conn.) finished in eighth place with a time of 2:31.60.

Both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 meter relay teams claimed third place in the meet with times of 4:03.49 and 9:55.81, respectively.

Meghan Nicolletta (East Hampton, Conn.) claimed third in the pole vault with height of 3.05 meters as the Owls dominated the pole vault with the top three spots.

Raysa Florentino (Groton, Conn.) competed in the 500 meters with eighth place finish with a time of 1:21.74.

Nicole Strauss (Shelton, Conn.) was eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19.08.65.

The Owls will be back in action next weekend for the New England Championships to be held on Feb. 24-25 in Boston, Mass.
