Bell, Brown Reach NCAA Qualifying Mark Today at Yale Track and Field Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) and
Brittany Brown (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) of the Southern Connecticut State University women's indoor track and field team reached NCAA qualifying marks in their respective events today as the Owls opened the 2011-2012 seasons with their first meet at the Coxe Cage on the Yale University Campus today. Brown managed a NCAA qualifying mark in the long jump and another in the 60 meter high hurdles, while Bell reached the mark in the 60 meter dash. Brown also claimed third in the 200 meter dash and Bell was part of the team that claimed first in the 4x400 meter relay team with
Nyoshee Lowry (Danbury, Conn.),
Brittany Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.), and
Raysa Florentino (Groton, Conn.)
Feshman
Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) claimed first in the pole vault in her first event as an Owl. She managed to clear a height of 3.5 meters.
Florentino finished second in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:16.42.
Samantha Spindel (Brewster, N.Y.) managed a fifth place finish in the weight toss with a distance of 15.2 meters, while Julia Williamson (Milford, Conn.) was in eighth.
Aubrey Dowding (Warwick, R.I.) and
Elizabeth Bashir (Colchester, Conn.) each managed a toss of 12.20 meters to finish fourth and fifth in the shot put.
Sophomore
Chelsea Gaglio (West Haven, Conn.) cleared a height of 1.55 meters in the high jump event to claim third place.
With a time of 9.00, Niemczyk claimed fourth overall in the 60 meter hurdles and eighth in the 60 meter high hurdles.
The Owls will be back in action next weekend for a Friday and Saturday meet in Manhattan, N.Y. for the Brother Jasper Invitational.
