NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A collection of non-perishable food products was taken to the Connecticut Food Bank warehouse in East Haven this week. The items were part of a series of initiatives during the fall that featured contributions from Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. With the latest contribution, the Owls have donated approximately 1,000 pounds of food to the Connecticut Food Bank over the course of the past three years.

Founded in 1982, Connecticut Food Bank is an affiliate of America's Second Harvest – The Nation's Food Bank Network. It is the largest centralized source of donated, emergency food in Connecticut. Through warehouses in East Haven, Fairfield, and Waterbury, and distribution sites in New London and Stamford, the organization provides food products to more than 650 soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries and daycare programs in Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham counties.

The food drive is just one example of many community outreach events that SCSU student-athletes will take part in during the 2011-12 academic year as part of the Tim Greer Insurance Agency Community Service Cup.

Initiated in September, 2008, the 'Community Service Cup' program provides a competitive format that allows student-athletes to gain an enriched experience through engagement with the on-campus and local communities by supporting ventures of traditional citizens, campus community members and peer students and student-athletes. SCSU student-athletes volunteered nearly 3,000 hours of their time to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2010-11 academic year.
