Five Owls Tabbed For Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Outdoor Track And Field All-Academic Team
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Five members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's outdoor track and field team –
Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.),
Alicia Gray (Colchester, Conn.),
Alasia Griebel (Bristol, Conn.),
Kimberly Johnson (Lisbon, Conn.) and
Jaclyn Sullivan (Lisbon, Conn.) – have been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team.
Bell was an All-Region pick in the 100 and 200 meters as well as in the 4x100 relay this spring. She was also a New England Champion as a part of the 4x100 relay. Bell is now a three-time NE-10 Women's Track and Field All-Academic Team pick for her career and carries a 3.44 cumulative grade point average.
Gray was an All-Region honoree in the pole vault this spring who also placed third at the Northeast-10 Championship in the same event. Gray carries a 3.81 cumulative grade point average.
Griebel was an NCAA qualifier in the 1500 meters, in addition to earning All-Region laurels in the 800 and 1500 meters, and All-New England accolades in the 1500 meters and 4x800 meters, setting a new SCSU record. Griebel was also the Northeast-10 Champion in the 1500 meters. Griebel, who carries a 3.83 cumulative grade point average, was named to the league's All-Academic Team in all three seasons this year – for cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
Johnson capped off a fine year with a strong spring. She was All-Region and All-New England, as well as the Northeast-10 Conference Champion and a NCAA qualifier in the pole vault. Johnson, who carries a 3.73 cumulative grade point average, was also named as a 2011 NE-10 Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team pick.
Sullivan, also a second-time honoree having previously earned Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team accolades, was an All-New England selection in the 4x800 meters, which set a new SCSU record. Sullivan also finished fourth at the Northeast-10's in the 4x800 meters, fifth in the 1500 meters and 10th in the 800 meters. Sullivan carries a 3.87 cumulative grade point average.
To be eligible for selection to the academic all-conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR).
