NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) of the softball team and senior Diwani Augustine (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men's outdoor track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May.

Downs helped power the Owls to their second consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Regional final. She batted a team-high .405 during the month, a stretch in which the Owls posted a 9-4 mark. Downs also led the club with 14 RBI, 10 runs scored and a .762 slugging percentage. She hit .526 in the NE-10 Tournament as the Owls won an improbable four games on the final day of the event to claim the crown. Downs continued to swing a hot bat in the NCAA Tournament, hitting .375 with two home runs and eight RBI, including a walk-off grand slam against Merrimack in an elimination game. Downs slugged .947 in the NE-10 Tournament and .813 in the NCAA's. She also had six multiple-hit efforts in the month.

Augustine enjoyed a phenomenal month for the Owls and helped the squad win their first-ever New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship and their 18th straight Northeast-10 Conference title. He started the month by earning Most Outstanding Performer honors at the NE-10's after winning the conference title in the triple jump (47 feet, 7.75 inches) and 4x100 relay (a new meet record) and finishing third in the long jump (23 feet, nine inches). The following weekend, Augustine won the New England Championship in both the triple jump (49 feet, 9.75 inches) and the long jump (24 feet, 3.5 inches). He capped the month by collecting All-America honors in both the long jump (23 feet, 11.5 inches) and triple jump (49 feet, 7.75 inches) at the NCAA Championships. Augustine was also named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Regional Field Athlete of the Year and earned All-Region honors in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters and 4x100 relay.

For the third consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Month' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Month' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
