NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's outdoor track and field team placed third at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Jess Dow Field. The finish matches the highest in program history. SCSU was the top Division II finisher, behind only Division I schools New Hampshire and Northeastern. In addition, the 4x100 relay tandem of Sahnique Castella (Hartford, Conn.), Sarah Hill (Rockville, Conn.), Courtni Walker (Uniondale, N.Y.) and Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) captured the New England title in that event with a time of 46.63 seconds.

Fourteen Owls collected All-New England honors on the final day of competition.

Brittany Brown (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) earned All-New England laurels and finished in second place in both the 100 hurdles and the high jump. She had a time of 14.12 seconds in the 100 meters hurdles and leaped 5 feet, 7 inches in the high jump. Teammate Chelsea Gaglio (East Haven, Conn.) also earned All-New England honors with a seventh place mark (5 feet, three inches).

Hill also placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 57.22 seconds.

Alasia Griebel (Bristol, Conn.) was fourth in the 1500 meters (4:32.91) to earn All-New England honors.

The Owls had two in the top six in the 100 meters. Walker was the runner-up with a time of 11.85 seconds, while Castella was sixth in 12.34 seconds.

Walker also placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 25.37 seconds.

Brittany Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.) placed eighth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.90.

The 4x400 relay team of Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.), Hill, Raysa Florentino (Groton, Conn.) and Dairha Veloz placed third with a time of 3:50.96.

Kimberly Johnson (Lisbon, Conn.) was fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 11.75 inches.

The 4x800 relay team of Vanriel, Jaclyn Sullivan (Lisbon, Conn.), Griebel and Megan Carroll (Shelton, Conn.) finished fifth with a time of 9:19.78, which set a new school record.

Qualifying Owls will return to action for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
