DeLa Cruz, Lumax, Gonzalez Achieve NCAA Provisional Mark At Day Two of UConn Alumni Invite; Elliot First In Long Jump
STORRS, Conn. – Corey DeLa Cruz (Alamogordo, N.M.) and Akeem Elliot (Greater Portmore, Jamaica) of the Southern Connecticut State University men's outdoor track and field team took first in their respective events at day two of the UConn Alumni Invitational. DeLa Cruz captured the top spot in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.41, while Elliot was first in the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters. Selasi Lumax (Somerset, N.J.) finished second in the 800 meter with a time of 1:51.46. All three student athletes achieved a NCAA provisional mark.
Enis Bukalo (Derby, Conn.) took fifth in the shot put with a distance of 15.08 meters and an eighth place finish in the discus throw with a launch of 45.66 meters.
A.J. Guerra (Stafford Springs, Conn.) finished third in the hammer toss with a distance of 55.99 meters. Nicholas Fedor (Bethany, Conn.) claimed sixth with a distance of 53.87 meters in the same event.
Omar Gonzalez (Bristol, Conn.) was fourth in the javelin with a toss of 59.21 meters. With this throw, Gonzalez gained a NCAA provisional mark.
Jared Dixon (Middle Village, N.Y.) tied for second with a student athlete from Central Connecticut with a height cleared of 1.99 meters in the high jump.
Jonathan Galli (Redding, Conn.) and Nelson Laskowski (Pomfret Center, Conn.) were fifth and seventh in the pole vault with both men clearing 4.34 meters.
Casey Canada (Royal, Ark.) finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.06, while Logan Sharpe (Esperance, N.Y.) claimed sixth.
The Owls put three members of their team into the top eight of the 200 meter dash. Stenson Jean-Baptiste (Stratford, Conn.), Rudolph Cowan (Hartford, Conn.), and Twayne Forth (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively.
The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Lumax, DeLa Cruz, Josh Perry (Nagatuck, Conn.), and Laskowski finished third with a time of 3:20.25.
The Owls will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the Metropolitan Championships in New Brunswick, N.J. for a two day event on April 15-16.
