Connecticut Outdoors: April 27th-May 3rd Top Performers and Breakthroughs
Connecticut athletes continued to raise the level of competition across invitationals, dual meets, and national-caliber showcases from April 27 through May 3. The week featured standout sprint doubles, elite distance racing, dominant field event performances, and several athletes continuing strong breakout spring campaigns. Meets like the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational, Track Night NYC, and conference duals produced some of the strongest performances seen statewide this season.
Sprints & Hurdles
The sprint events delivered several of the top marks in Connecticut this spring, led by Brenan McCabe (Immaculate High School), who produced one of the most impressive doubles of the week at the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational. McCabe won the 400 meters in 46.95 and returned to take the 200 meters in 21.49, dominating fields of 66 and 344 athletes respectively. His versatility from the quarter-mile down to the short sprint events continues to separate him as one of the state's premier performers.
Another major sprint performance came from Adrian Vasquez (Bethel High School), who posted a state-leading 21.67 in the 200 meters at Bunnell v Bethel v Brookfield v Harding while also winning the 100 in 10.56. The junior now sits atop the Connecticut junior rankings in both events and continues to establish himself among the state's fastest.
On the girls side, Lauren Kropo (Naugatuck High School) swept both short sprints at the Org-Jake Spartan Invitational, running 11.96 in the 100 and 24.40 in the 200. Both victories came against competitive fields and reinforced her standing among Connecticut's top all-around track talents.
Paige Wilson (Windsor High School) also continued her outstanding season with wins at two different meets. Wilson ran 56.80 to win the 400 meters at Track Night NYC against a 44-athlete field before adding another victory in the 200 meters in 25.72 at Glastonbury @ Windsor.
In the hurdles, Davian Johnson (East Hartford High School) posted the top boys hurdles performance of the week, running 13.83 to win the 110-meter hurdles at East Hartford @ South Windsor. He also added a 50.29 victory in the 400 meters, showing strong range across vastly different disciplines.
Charles Dalles (Coginchaug Regional High School) continued his strong spring campaign by winning the 300-meter hurdles in 37.42 at the Marty Roberts Invitational while also placing second in the 110 hurdles in 15.13. Earlier in the week, he ran 22.43 in the 200 meters at the Shoreline Mega Meet #1, currently ranking #20 in Connecticut this season.
Several athletes also produced major breakthroughs during the week. Jayda Smith (Weaver) lowered her 100-meter best from 13.91 to 13.10 at GHC Meet #3, winning a massive 67-athlete field and continuing her rapid improvement this spring.
Soham Chakraborty (Xavier) also made a substantial leap in the boys 100 meters, dropping from 12.03 to 11.44 at Hillhouse vs. Mercy/Xavier. The performance earned him the victory and pushed him further into the state's developing sprint scene.
Another notable improvement came from Isaiah Cajou (Norwich Free Academy), who cut more than a second off his previous 200-meter best with a 23.44 victory at Fitch @ NFA.
The boys hurdles scene also saw a major breakthrough from Zeki Duman (Shepaug Valley), who ran 15.10 in the 110-meter hurdles at Thomaston & Shepaug @ Terryville. Duman improved from 16.01, set a school record, and moved to #9 in Connecticut this season.
Distance
The distance events were highlighted by another elite showing from Lauren Parrett (Glastonbury High School), who picked up victories in two different events at separate meets. Parrett won the 3200 meters in 10:22.82 at Fast Times at Ridgefield High before returning to run 2:18.32 for another win in the 800 meters at Glastonbury @ Windsor. The sophomore currently ranks #1 in Connecticut among sophomores in both events.
On the boys side, Nathan Lee (Brunswick School) turned in one of the top distance performances of the week nationally, running 4:05.25 to win the mile at Track Night NYC in a loaded 168-runner field. The victory further established Lee among the Northeast's top milers this spring.
A significant breakthrough also came from Astrid Moquete-Blomstro (Stamford), who continued her breakout distance campaign after dropping nearly two full minutes in the 3200 meters earlier this season. Her 12:17.13 performance at Stamford @ Trumbull moved her further up the Connecticut sophomore rankings and marked another major step forward in her development.
Jumps
The jumps were once again highlighted by the emergence of Sarah Alamu (Naugatuck High School). The freshman cleared 5-6 in the high jump, improving dramatically from her previous best of 4-10 and moving to #1 in Connecticut. Alamu also added personal bests in the 100 meters and long jump during the same meet, showcasing exceptional versatility early in her high school career.
In the horizontal jumps, Vanessa Agyemang (Bloomfield High School) produced one of the strongest girls long jump marks of the week, winning at Conard vs. Bloomfield with a leap of 18-5. She also added a victory in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.31 to complete a strong all-around performance.
Throws
The throws were led by a dominant week from Lauren Plummer (Loomis Chaffee), who swept both throwing events at Choate Track & Field vs Loomis Chaffee. Plummer threw 39-5 in the shot put and 140-0.5 in the discus, winning both events comfortably and continuing to rank among the state's top throwers.
