BOSTON - The Southern Connecticut State University women's indoor track and field team won the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Thursday night. It's the second straight NE-10 track title for the Owls, who also won the 2010 outdoor crown. The Owls could not be stopped capturing five of the top spots including all three relay event to claim its second straight season Northeast-10 conference championship.

The Southern Connecticut State University distance medley, 4x400, and 4x800 each finished top in their event.

The Owls distance medley team (DMR) consisted of Megan Carroll (Shelton, Conn.), Raysa Florentino (Groton, Conn.), Alasia Griebel (Bristol, Conn.), Jaclyn Sullivan (Lisbon, Conn.). They finished five second ahead of the second place team from Stonehill, while breaking the Northeast-10 meet record by almost nine seconds with a time of 12:42.63.  The DMR record was set back in 2008 by a team from Stonehill.

Freshman Daira Veloz, Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.), Sarah Hill (Rockville, Conn.), and Brittany Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.) made up the 4x400 relay team that broke the Northeast-10 Conference record by a full eight seconds set in 2006 with a time of 3:52.78.  The first place time of the 4x800 team was 9:45.71.

The Owls claimed the top two spots in the pole vault. Kimberly Johnson (Lison, Conn.) and Niemczyk cleared heights of 3.64 meters and 3.34 meters, respectively. Johnson broke the previous Northeast-10 Championship meet record of 11 feet, 9.75 inches.

Alasia Griebel finished first in the mile three seconds faster than the closest opponent with a time of 5:02.77. 

Brittany Brown (Mount Vernon, Conn.) finished just five-hundredths of a second off the lead in the 55 meter hurdles in second with a time of 8.36.

Hill claimed a second place finish in the 500 meters with a time of 1:16.87.

Sasha Saylor (Hartford, Conn.) took second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.59 meters.

What's next for the Owls? The women's track and field team continues to the New England Championships held on Feb. 25-26.
