Connecticut Outdoors: March 30th- April 5th Top Performers and Breakthroughs
The first week of April brought a strong wave of early-season movement across Connecticut. From sprint doubles and hurdle breakthroughs, to big throws and elite clearances in the jumps, last week gave a clear look at who will be names to watch this outdoor season.
Sprints
For the boys, Hanief Jones (Hartford Public) turned in one of the most impressive all-around sprint showings of the week at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational. The freshman won the 100 meters in a personal best 10.88 and followed it up with another PR of 22.25 to take the 200 meters as well. Jones continues to establish himself as one of the state's top young sprint talents.
At the Bellringer Track & Field Invitational, Shelldon Simpson II (Windsor) delivered a major 200-meter win, clocking 21.88 to take first in a field of more than 100 competitors.
On the girls side, Lauren Kropo (Naugatuck) ran 55.30 to win the 400 meters at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational, dipping under her previous PR. Paige Wilson (Windsor) also picked up a strong sprint victory, winning the 200 meters in 25.06 at Bellringer.
Jaida Murray (Windsor) added another sprint highlight by winning the 100 meters in 12.39, another personal best performance.
A breakthrough performance also came from Gizelle Clarke (Windsor), who lowered her 200-meter PR to 26.15 at Bellringer and finished third in a very deep field.
Hurdles
The hurdles had one of the clearest breakout efforts of the week. Javonni Reynolds (Bloomfield) put together one of the most impressive all-around performances in the state last week, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 14.24 and the 400 meters in 51.79 at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational. Both marks were personal bests, with the hurdle mark reinforcing his standing as one of the top juniors in Connecticut.
Another notable improvement came from Dolan Krasnitski (East Hampton), who cut more than a second off his previous best in the 110-meter hurdles by running 16.14 at Bellringer.
Jumps
Ethan Rowe (Bloomfield) produced one of the best marks in the state last week when he soared over 6-10 to win the high jump at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational. It was a new personal best and further strengthened his hold on the state lead. He also added a 20-6 long jump for sixth place, giving Bloomfield points in multiple field events.
On the girls side, Ayden Darvil (Suffield) cleared 5-4 to win the high jump at Bellringer, posting the top junior mark in Connecticut this season. Kayla Elder (Windsor) also moved forward with a new PR of 5-2, finishing second in the same event.
The long jump saw a major breakthrough from Mishon Hite (A.I. Prince Tech), who improved to 22-1 to win at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational. That mark represents a significant jump from his previous best of 21-5.5.
Throws
Khile Francis (Bloomfield) swept the throwing events at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational, winning the shot put with 56-0 and the discus with 162-3. His discus mark was also a new PR, showing that he is already rounding into strong form outdoors.
One of the biggest individual breakthroughs of the week came from Jonathan Scott (Bristol Central), who launched a massive 52-6 shot put PR to set a school record and move into the state rankings. He also made a huge jump in the discus, improving to 141-9 after entering with a previous best of 102-2, making one of the more dramatic week-to-week jumps in the state.
On the girls side, Kara Khan (Windsor) improved her discus PR to 125-4 at Bellringer, while Kathryn Dobosz (Woodstock Academy) broke her school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 126-4 at the Tammy Schondelmayer Invitational.
Overview
Connecticut's first week of April brought a little bit of everything: sprint doubles, state-leading marks, school records, quality distance races, and several meaningful PRs across the field events. If last week was any indication, there should be a lot more movement ahead as athletes continue settling into the spring.
