Steelman Helps NC State to NCAA D1 XC National Title


NC State senior Hannah Steelman earned NCAA D1 cross-country All-American honors for the third time in her collegiate career with a 24th place finish at the 2021 national meet on Saturday. Steelman ran a consistent race that saw her get out with the leaders coming through the first 2000 meters in 34th place in a time of 6:33.1. The former Orono high school standout moved up to 14th at 3000m and improved up one spot to 13th at 4000m with a time of 13:14.1. Steelman who finished fourth in the 2020 NCAA XC Championship run in March of 2021 would go on to finish 24th in a fast time of 19:49.6 for 6k. Hannah was the fourth runner from NC State across the finish line as their entire top five finished inside the top 32 and earned All-American honors. This was the first NCAA team title in school history for the Wolfpack after a runner-up finish a year ago.

Former Yarmouth high school star Anneka Murrin (Loyola, Chicago) was inside the top 40 during the first 2k didn't finish the race.

At the D2 XC national meet Cedarville senior Bethany Sholl (Scarborough HS) finished 125th running 22:29.8 for 6k. Sholl helped her team to an 11th place finish. In the men's meet Cedarville senior Caleb Pendleton placed 206th in a time of 34:28 for 10k while Stonehill College freshman Jace Hollenbach (Mt Ararat, HS)

The men's D3 race Colby sophomore Tyler Morris placed seventh overall in a fast 23:58.4 to earn All-American honors. WPI senior Ben Steeves (Bonny Eagle HS) finished 150th with a 25:05 effort over 8k. Bowdoin senior John Hood was 151st in 25:05.3 while teammate Andrew Meredith was 192nd with a 25:25 effort. Colby freshman Gordon Doore finished 218th with a 25:40 effort. Husson junior Joel Bond placed 239th in his fist national meet running 25:49.2, while WPI sophomore Jarrett Gulden (Lincoln Academy) was 262th with a 26:05.9.

In the team race Colby was 22nd followed by Bates in 26th for the Maine colleges competing. 

Tufts junior Anna Slager (Gorham HS) led former Maine high school athletes at the D3 national championship in Kentucky on Saturday. Slager closed well over the final kilometer of the race moving up 11 places to finish 23rd overall in a time of 21:35.6 to help her team to a ninth place finish. Behind her Bates junior Jillian Richardson (Edward Little HS) started the first 1k in 71st place and gradually moved herself up to 33rd to earn All-American in 21:42.7 to lead the Bobcats to a 16th place team finish. Also competing for Bates was Olivia Reynolds (Maine Coast Waldorf) she ran 22:54.5 moving up 17th places over the final 1k to place 174th.

Vassar junior Augusta Stockman (Camden Hills HS) had a strong effort running 22:34.6 to finish in 121st place. A few spots behind her in 148th Washington & Lee sophomore Carolyn Todd (Greely HS) clocked a 22:44.9. Connecticut College junior Julia Curran (Greely HS) placed 183rd with a 22:59.1 effort

Bowdoin's duo of Leila Trummel and Cameron Mackenzie had a strong day. Trummel placed 94th in 22:25.4 while senior Cameron Mackenzie was just behind in 22:34.4 in 120th spot.

Freshman Claire Beebe led the three Colby Mules runners with a 175th place effort in 22:55.2 she was followed by Lindsay Michels in 176th with her 22:56.1 effort. Meghan Garrett a sophomore finished 227th with her 23:21.3 effort.
