Gavin Sherry made a headline-grabbing move on Tuesday night.

The Conard (CT) High School senior and preseason No. 1 cross country athlete on the MileSplit50 announced his commitment to Stanford University via Instagram, alongside his twin brother Callum Sherry, with both bringing to the table top-notch resumes in the coming years.

Gavin, a Foot Locker Nationals finalist and All-American in 2019, is the No. 6 ranked recruit in the Class of 2022. He is considered among the best young distance runners in the country for the coming 2021 cross country and 2022 track and field seasons.

Both will contribute to an already strong recruiting base, one that saw top-level recruits like Cole Sprout ('20), Thomas Boyden ('20), John Lester ('21), Nolan Topper ('21) and Robert DiDonato ('21) all sign with the Cardinal in recent years.

A season ago Stanford finished fifth at the NCAA Cross Country championships under Ricardo Santos, who was hired in 2019 and has since reignited the program under his leadership. Stanford has won four NCAA titles in cross country over its history and has finished second five more times, including its most recent in 2016.

This past winter three freshman -- Sprout, Charles Hicks and Ky Robinson -- finished within the top 50 places at nationals, with both Hicks and Sprout elevating to All-American status.

Gavin Sherry's commitment is a major building block for the men's program, as he brings to the table personal record performances of 4:01.88 for 1,600m, 4:07.20 for the full mile, 8:47.20 for 3,200m and 14:30.37 for 5K on the track. In cross country, Sherry has posted a 5K best of 15:06.00 on the grass.

More importantly, Sherry has exhibited an ability to train at an elite level, compete among the best in the country and win at all levels. His brother Callum brings a strong resume that includes personal best times of 4:15.37, 9:12.87 for 3,200m and 15:04.62 for 5k.
