Top 10 Preseason Girls Rankings: #9 Mia Costa

#9 Mia Costa (Walpole)

Last year was the best cross country season of Walpole senior Mia Costa's high school career.  She finished 11th at the MIAA All-State Finals, bettering her previous best finish of 35th.  We saw Costa break out on the track in 2019 running 2:58 for the 1000m indoors and 5:07 in the Mile outdoors.

It's certainly hard to project where Costa ended the 2020 season as we did not see her on the indoor track last winter and obviously there was no outdoor season.  But as far as her cross country progression has gone I'd expect her to be amongst the top 10 girls in Massachusetts this fall.

Over three seasons Costa finished 35th as a freshman, 59th as a sophomore and 11th as a junior at the MIAA All-State Finals.  Another thing that stands out is at Bob McIntrye Twilight she's continued to improve her mark year over year with a best 18:35 for 6th place a year ago.

Her progression on the track has been consistent with her progression in cross country dropping her Mile time from 5:27 to 5:09 over her first two years of outdoors.  She also holds a 2 Mile PR of 11:24 from her sophomore year.

Costa is the 6th returner to the MIAA Division 1 finals from a year ago.  She should certainly be a contender for a top 5 finish this fall.  She ranks as the 10th fastest returner in Massachusetts in our database from 2019.
