Sydney Masciarelli Breaks Sophomore Class Record In 5K

Marianapolis Preparatory (CT) School sophomore Sydney Masciarelli, 15, has quietly been putting down national-class times on her own this spring track season.

The reigning Foot Locker National champion opened her season in April with a US No. 2 time of 16:30 in the 5K at an invitational at Fitchburg State University, then accepted an invitation to The Penn Relays Olympic Development mile, where she produced a mile PR of 4:55.65.

Next was a 3000m race with her brother, Salvatore, and another US No. 2 time of 9:34.

Each race had its own issue -- zero warm-up for that 5K, a very late invitation to The Penn Relays, a co-ed 3K paced alongside her brother.

Finally, on Saturday, Masciarelli finally produced a race with complete focus, earning a new US No. 1 and sophomore class outdoor record of 16:24.18 in the 5K at the Battle Road Track Club's Twilight Meet at Bentley University in Massachusetts.

That time surpassed the 8-year-old record of 16:24.83, last set by Ravenscroft School (NC) graduate Wesley Frazier in 2011.

She finished second, roughly 11 seconds behind winner Laura Rose Donegan, 25, who ran 16:13.36.

Masciarelli's season will continue in Connecticut with Marianapolis Prepatory, where she competes in the NEPSTA, a private school conference consisting of three divisions and 62 schools.

A year ago Masciarelli competed at New Balance Nationals Outdoor, where she ran her first nationally competitive race in the 1-mile. She's considering it again, alongside an invitational to the Brooks PR 2-mile.
