Arnold Mills Road Race Celebrates 50 Years

The first of several popular road races this summer will be held next Wednesday when runners line up on Nate Whipple Highway in Cumberland for the annual Arnold Mills Road Race. This will be a milestone event for the popular four-miler as it will be celebrating its 50th year.

Just like in the past, race director Tom Kenwood expects a stellar field for this year's event, one that often includes several past and present high school stars, such as six-time winner and Cumberland resident Chris Magill, a onetime standout from St. Raphael Academy.  Magill, who now is a successful coach at his alma-mater, appears to be in peak form. He recently won the master's division of the BAA 10K where he was clocked in 34 minutes, 30 seconds.

To celebrate the race's milestone year, the first 600 participants that cross the finish line will receive a special commemorative medal designed by Mark Mercurio of Go East Promotional Products in Warwick. The registration fee is $13 prior to the race and $15 the day of the race. T-shirts will also be available for an additional $10. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in seven different age categories. The top finishers will also receive a trophy.

The race is schedule to begin at 9 a.m. Registration the day of the race will begin at 7 a.m. Applications  for the Arnold Mills' race can also be picked up at the North Cumberland Fire Station or the Cumberland Recreation Center.
