Highlights of Day 1 at Penn Relays Carnival

Some highlights during Day 1 of the Penn Relays Carnival.

Staples High senior Hannah DeBalsi clocked a near personal best of 9 minutes, 36.09 seconds in the Championship 3,000-meter run to finish sixth overall.Hannah DeBalsi ran a near personal best in the 3,000-meter run. the race was won by Virginia's Weini Kelatiof Heritage, who led from start to finish, crossing the line with a nation-leading time of 9:19.01.

Wilbur Cross senior Gabby Curtis placed 14th overall in the meet-opening 400m hurdles. She was timed in 1:04.16.

Bloomfield's Brittany Jones and Staples' Reece Schachne each finished 12th in their respective field events. Schachne earned her placement with a toss of 119 feet, 1 inch in the javelin and Jones had a toss of 41-10 in the shot put.

In separate 4x400m heats, Greenwich was second with a time of 4:09.37, thanks to a 59.13 anchor from Emily Phippedes. Sacred Heart Academy was 12th in its heat with a 4:17.19 clocking.
