Runners to Watch: Hayley Collins, Tolland

The high school cross-country season officially begins next week for Connecticut athletes.

During the last few days, MileSplit CT featured the top schools from each class in the Nutmeg State. In the coming weeks, we'll highlight the individuals to keep an eye on for the upcoming 2015 campaign. Can Staples' Hannah DeBlasi finish off her outstanding career with an unprecedented fourth straight state crown? Can Tolland win its third consecutive class title and fifth straight state crown. You be the judge by some of its talented harriers who will be returning to the trails?

We begin our Runners to Watch series with the girls. Thanks to MARY ALBI for writing the bios of our athletes.

Hayley Collins

Tolland, junior

One of the top, if not the No. 1 junior returning this fall. Despite her youth, Collins established herself as a threat in not only the Central Connecticut Conference but entire state.

She finished second at the CCC (19:25.83), won the Class M (19:10) and ran a season-best time of 18:55 at the State Open to place fifth.

Collins is part of a deep and dangerous Tolland squad who will be trying for its fifth straight class crown and third State Open title in a row this fall.

She’ll be challenged and pushed by her own teammates every day, so expect another strong year out of Collins on the trails.
