Team Highlights The Hillhouse girls are tough to beat when you have a sprinter that is posting national leading marks in two events, and a distance runner that scores in three events. Add to that the effectiveness of their relays, and it becomes evident as to why they can post a 34 point win in a state championship. By the end of the meet, Hillhouse amassed 74 points and established themselves as the team to beat in New England. Staples was the definition of a team in their pursuit of the boys team championship. They gained some much needed points with the 1000m win of Henry Wynne and the second place finish of Dean Hefnawy in the pole vault, but the majority of their damage was done in the relays. Staples won the 4x400m and the Sprint Medley; in addition to picking-up a pair of 4th place finishes in the 4x200m and the 4x800m. Hillhouse was in the mix during the individual events, but Staples pulled away when the batons came out to end the day with 47 total points.
Event Highlights Precious Holmes of Hillhouse High School absolutely scorched the field and crushed the meet record with a US#1 time of 1:31.23. The old record was 1:35.06 set back in 2008 by Annelies Gamble of Amity High School, and Holmes was previously ranked US#1 when she ran 1:32.61 at the SCC Coaches Invitational last month. Holmes set another meet record when she crossed the line in the 300m. Her 38.56 surpassed the 1996 record of 39.17 set by Shayla Wallace of Northwest Catholic. Holmes’ 300m time is currently US#2. Cherraine Davis of Southington continues to be the dominant female thrower in New England. She won the event with a toss of 42’4.5” and remains at NE#1 with her 44’2” performance from the Class LL Championships. Janae Wilson (Windsor) and Alexa Eldracher (Amity) ended the long jump competition deadlocked at 17’9.5”. Wilson would get the win based on her second best jump of 17’9.25, while Eldracher’s second best jump was not far behind at 17’7”. The Bloomfield girls 4x200m team of Adrian Jones, Vanessa Whittingham, Alleah Red, and Rayanna Relerford moved to CT#1 and NE#2 after winning the event in 1:44.30. Sarah Gillespie of Northwest Catholic snags the 1000 meter meet record by under a second in her 2:53.01 winning effort. The old record was 2:53.19 set back in 2003 by Meghan Owen of Killingly. Gillespie’s time helps her retain the top spot in New England and moved her to US#7. Five girls total ran under 3 minutes in the event, including Kellie Davis of Hillhouse who was second at 2:55.28. Davis would later return to win the 1600m in 5:09.46. The Greenwich boys 4x200m team moves to CT#1 with their winning time of 1:31.87. The just missed the meet record by .33 and are now ranked fourth in New England. The Simsbury 4x800m relay team of Jefferson Wilkes, Kyle Heubner, Joel Kirk, and Kevin Stanko capture a meet record and state title with their 8:04.16 clocking in the event. The old record was 8:05.30 set back in 1999 by Xavier. Danielle Lewis of Hillhouse won the 55m hurdles in 7.68. He trails only Adam Robertino of Norwalk in the state rankings who posted a 7.67 at the Class LL Championships. Robertino finished 4th in 7.97. Sophomore Harold Cooper of Hillhouse continues to lead the state after he posted a 6.55 to win the 55m. Cooper was just off his state leading 6.51 that he posted at the Class M Championships. Henry Wynne broke a 23 year old Staples school record by winning the 1000m in a time of 2:29.56. This time ranks Wynne CT#1, NE#5, and US#13. Marcus Motill (Greenwich) and Malcolm Connor (Trumbull) thrilled the crowd with a blistering pace in the 600m. Motill earned the win with a US#7 time of 1:21.13, while Connor moves to US#14 with his 1:21.98 second place finish. Ben Ostrowski (East Lyme) and Aaeron Sykes (SMSA) both had impressive races; finishing in 1:22.02 and 1:22.31, respectively. Clark Shurtleff of Amity picked-up a very impressive in the mile, clocking in at 4:16.48. Joe Crafa of Rocky Hill (4:17.16) challenged Shurtleff and the pair put a three second gap on Harry Warnick (Fairfield Warde) who finished in third at 4:20.79. Reid Watson was the only girl to dip under 11 minutes in the 3200m. The veteran distance star from Glastonbury posted the fastest time in the state by winning the event in 10:52.52. Sabrina Olsen (Thomaston) was second in 11:05.14 and Kellie Davis of Hillhouse was third in 11:13.01. It was Davis’ third distance event of the meet. Jake Feinstein of Newtown seems to always find a way to win. This time, he was able to put a two second gap on Harry Warnick of Farifield Warde and hold on for the win in the 3200m (9:28.53). Warnick finished in second (9:31.54) and Joe Crafa of Rocky Hill was third (9:32.93). Jake Scinto ended the day with two individual championships to add to his already full trophy case. The senior from Cheshire won the high jump at 6’4” and then went on to win the long jump at 21’11.75”.
