SCC Cross Country Preview

SCC Boys

Xavier is ranked number 16 nationally according to Milesplit's national poll.  Last year, they won the SCC, State Open, New Englands, Nike Cross Country Regionals and took 18th at Nationals.   Four All State athletes- Robbie Cozean, Pete Schulten, Dillon Selfors and William Curran return from last season's top seven. They had a very tight pack that finished within 20-30 seconds of each other during championship season and they look to duplicate their performances this year.

They will be aided by the return of a healthy Cozean who was injured in the spring of his freshman and didn't begin training until the middle of August last year.  Cozean was 3rd at the State Open his freshman year finished a disappointing 20th last year.  But by outdoor track, he brought his 1600m down to 4:24 and raced a 5000m on the track, finishing in 14:53.69.  The time was ranked 19th nationally and is the 6th best time in Connecticut history.

Xavier also brings up a junior varsity team that went 1-5 in the conference meet which should improve their chances in the post season.

Shelton and Amity should be battling it out for the runner up spot.  The Gaels will be led by the top returning finisher from the SCC, Class LL and State Open- Robert Dillon.  Their entire varsity team is returning from last year's 4th place team.

Amity took 2nd last year and is always prepared for the cross country season.  Their top runner, Connor Visnic, made huge strides last spring and won the Midnight Invitational 5k on his home track in 15:09 along with taking 8th in the State Open 3200m with a 9:22.  He finished one place behind and only a half second behind Dillon.  While Amity's front runners will be in the mix, they will need to develop more depth if they hope to finish in the top two.
