Maryland Track Standout Fatally Shot Weeks Before College

Amir Miller had planned on joining the men's track and field team at Mount St. Mary's University once he arrived on the Emmitsburg, Maryland, campus in a few weeks.

But the Fairmont Heights (MD) graduate never got that chance.

The 17-year-old was fatally shot on July 14 following a robbery attempt in Prince George County, according to The Washington Post.

Davion Ballinger, a 26-year-old Northwest Washington resident, was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Miller.

This past season, Miller had run a personal best of 6.86 seconds in the 60m indoors at the Ed Bowie Classic. He owned career marks of 11.67 seconds in the 100m, 23.28 in the 200m and 39.01 in the 300m. He qualified for Maryland's state cross country championships in November and was 10th at his state's regional.

Our hearts go out to Miller's family, friends, teammates and coaches.
