Clare Martin got her weekend off to a magnificent start at the USATF Junior Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
The recent Newton South graduate advanced to the finals of the 800-meter run on Friday with an all-time best of 2 minutes, 6.87 seconds. Competing in the first heat, she finished second to Florida state champion Caitlin Collier, who was timed in 2:05.43. Martin's time was the second fastest of the day and a PR by more than a second.
The finals will be held on Saturday at 7:18 p.m. The top two finishers in that race move on to the World Championships in Peru.
Lenox Memorial's Shannon Meisberger came two placements from advancing in the 400m hurdles, finishing tenth overall in 1:02.62.
