Busy Weekend Coming Up for CT Athletes

Amity Midnight Invitational

Amity HS Woodbridge, CT
May 6, 2017

The Amity Midnight Invitation, originally scheduled for Friday night, has been postponed until Saturday evening.  This meet has been going on for several years at different facilities but the main focus has always been a 5000m on the track.  Saturday's meet will be a great battle between Sean Parker of Shepaug who was 3rd in the cross country State Open, Brendan Murray of Cheshire who ran 9:14 for two miles at Indoor Nationals, Amity's 3x All state cross country runner Kyle Beaudette, Fairfield Prep's Footlocker qualifier Drew Thompson and SWC champion Eli Nahom of New Milford plus many others.

On the girl's side Mercy's Bridgid Selfors who was fourth at the State Open in cross country and ran 17:34 at nationals last June will go against 11:11 3200m runner Lauren Moore of Danbury.

Shelton is bringing some of CT's top athletes including Ethan Shuster who was the Class LL champion in the 55HH this winter, junior Ed Radzion, the State Open Champion in the shot put and Samantha Stevens last year's state open shot and discus champion will all be competing.

The Middletown Invitational  will be held on Saturday with many of the best athletes in the state showing attending.  With the announcement that the Irv Black Invitational is being cancelled this year,  this will be the most competitive meet in the state this weekend.

There are several defending State Open champions and top ranked athletes in their events that are scheduled to compete.

In the pole vault Brandford's Bridget Wirtz is fresh off her win at the O'Grady Relays and is favored.  On the boys side Milan Spisek of Joel Barlow is the indoor Open champion and finished 4th at the Penn Relays with a state leading 14'9 jump.

The long jump features Jason Pinnock, the indoor state open long jump champion.  He has gone over 22ft several times this year and won the New York Relays two weeks ago.  Jahleah Harris is part of Bloomfield's powerful track team and was State Open champion this winter. She will join her teammate Adia Cavalier, plus Erica Marriott of North Haven who will all try to push each other over the 18ft mark.

Cavalier is also defending State Open champion in the triple jump and is looking to crack 38 ft which she has already done once this winter.

Junior Mike Burchell of Hand has just recently broke 51 feet in the shot put and is #2 in the state right now, and CT leader Brittany Jones of Bloomfield who threw 46ft at O'Grady Relays last week are the favorites in the shot put.

On the track, Bloomfield girl's 4 x 100m is almost guaranteed to win every time they grad the baton and they should be close to the meet record. Middletown, Windsor and Bristol Central boys currently own the 3rd, 5th and 6th best times in the state which should make a competitive race.  If the weather holds up, there could be another sub 43 team in the state this season.

Any time Mark Doyley of Weaver and Cassidy Palmer step on the track, there is a good change a record will be broken.  They both set the state record for 60m this winter with Doyley coming away with his 3rd All American honor.   Both are scheduled to run the 100m and 200m.

Caroline O'Neil  of Daniel Hand and Elizabeth McMahon of Conard both earned All England this winter and had a close race last weekend at the Greater Bristol Invitational where O'Neil won by .4 seconds with a time of 57.91.  Throw in Bloomfield's Jillian Mars who has been an instrumental part of Bloomfield's 4 x 400m relay and run in the 58s herself last year, you have makings of a great race.

Simsbury's Vicky Milledge won New Englands this winter in the 55HH but lost the State Open to rival Zaidra James of Bloomfield.  They will renew their rivalry this Saturday in the 100HH where anything can happen between the two of them.
Laurenzo Thompkins of the host Blue Dragons is the top returner in the 110HH this season and hopes to carry that banner in front of his hometown crowd.  He has already run 15.01 and will be looking to break that magic 15 second barrier.
Danielle Brinckman was last year's State Open champion in the 300 IH and will face the 2nd best returner
Zaidra James of Bloomfield who currently has the state leading time in the event.
This year's top two ranked 300 hurdlers, Marcus Manson of Windsor and Laurenzo Thompkins of Middletown will face each other and try to go under 40 seconds.  With Hall's Connor Blodgett, who broke 40 seconds last year in the race, it will be a fast one.
In the 200m Palmer will be challenged by Hand's O'Neil.   It will be a matchup of the state leading 100m sprinter vs the state leading 400m sprinter.  Both have run low 25s, so it could be anyone's race.

This meet has been postponed from Friday 5th to Sunday May 7th
