Danbury Girls/ Boys Sweep LL Titles for 2nd Year in a Row

Girls Highlights

  • Danbury's big winners were Bridget Chiaravalle taking the 55HH and Leah Sarkisian taking her 3rd consecutive LL win in the 600m.  The Hatters also took 3-4-5 in the long jump and scored 20 points in three relays.
  • Penda M'Bengue of Norwalk ties for 1st in the 55m and takes 2nd in the 55HH.
  • Hamden's Aisha Gay takes the 300m, runs a leg of the winning 4 x 200m and 3rd place 4 x 400m.
  • Emily Philippides easily wins the 1k, but comes back in a epic battle in the 1600m where Kate Romanchick is able to hold her off by .2 seconds in a race that came down to the wire.
  • Glastonbury's  Danielle Brinckman, Olivia Allen, Morocca Wiley and Erin McGill set the Class LL record in the 4 x 400m with 4:02.43 and Wiley, Allen and McGill joined Kaylen Hughes to win the 4 x 800m.
  • Fairfield Ludlowe's Sarah Leatherwood won her first major championship in the 3200 by running away from the field and finishing in a time of 11:14.12
  • The Manchester senior Elizabeth Hodge defended her high jump championship with a leap of 5'4
  • Lia Zavattaro of Greenwich cleared 11ft for the 6th time this season to win her first state title.
  • Dartmouth bound Samantha Stevens of Shelton defended her Class LL title in the shot with a throw of 41'7.5

Boys Highlights

  • Danbury Terrell Cunningham takes 2nd in the 600m, leads a 1-2 sweep in the 300m with Sean-Michael Parkinson taking 2nd and they combine with Malcolm Going and Daniel Campbell to win the 4 x 400m in meet record time of 3:28.94.
  • Junior Nathaniel Llanos, coming back from injury, wins his first state title in the pole vault with a jumps of 13'0
  • Danbury's other big points come from a 2-3-6 finish in the 55, Dan Nichols 2nd place time of 9:28 in the 3200m, Chase Nalley's runner up finish in the 55HH and their runner up finishes in the 4 x 200m, sprint medley and 3rd place finish in the 4 x 800m to give them 32 points in the relays.
  • UConn bound Tyler Gleen of Trumbull defended his title in the 600m, came from behind to help his team win the sprint medley relay with a 1:57.2 split and came back on tired legs to anchor his 4 x 400m team (51.9 split)  to a 2nd place finish.
  • Gleen's teammate, junior Tyler Rubish won his first individual state title in the 1000m and combined with his mentor in the SMR and 4 x 400m.
  • Greenwich didn't score in many events, but where they scored, they scored big.  Tyler Ferris held off the Danbury onslaught in the 55m by winning in 6.56. Scott Safir and Isaac Floyd went 1-2 in the high and long jump events. 
  • The Staples duo of Zakeer Ahmad  and William Landowne pulled away in the later half of the 1600m to go 1-2 in the event in times of 4:22.13 and 4:23.50.
  • Willliam Brisman set his personal record of 9:26.47 in the 3200m to win his first ever state title.
  • Shelton's Ed Radzion became only the 2nd CT boy to throw 50 feet in the shot put to win with a throw of 50'9. 
  • Shelton earned another state championship with Ethan Shuster win in the 55HH with a time of 8.04.
