CIAC State Open Recap


Under sunny skies Monday afternoon at Willowbrook Park, several athletes shined at the CIAC State Open.

Weaver's Mark Doyley was a double-winner, taking the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.87 seconds. He also led three runners under 22 seconds in the 200m, crossing the line at 21.46.

Brien McMahon senior Eric van der Els continued his mastery of the distance events, convincingly winning the 1,600m with a fast 4:08.42 clocking.

Ridgefield's Gabriel Altopp captured the 3,200m at 9:07.64.

In the 4x400m relay, Windsor took gold with a time of 3:19.84.

The girls' meet featured a  strong afternoon from Coginchaug's Jessica Drop, who defeated Wilbur Cross's Danae Rivers in the 1,600m with a time of 4:48.29. Rivers finished second at 4:52.36. Drop was also a runner-up to Staples standout Hannah DeBalsi in the 3,200m. DeBalsi won her fourth consecutive title with a time of 10:33.26. Drop was timed in 10:37.84.

In the 800m, Greenwich's Emily Phillippides won with a time of 2:11.90.

Gabby Curtis won her second straight 100m hurdle title with a time of 14.20. The day's fastest clocking of the day was by second-place finisher Bridget Chiaravalle, who tied the meet record of 14.16 in the preliminaries.
