CIAC State Open Highlights


Danae Rivers and Eric van der Els had a pair of impressive multiple-winning efforts at Saturday's State Open.

Rivers, the senior from Wilbur Cross, ran the nation's third fastest time the 1,600-meter run  with a winning time of 4 minutes, 53.88 seconds. Rivers came back shortly after to take the 1,000m where she was clocked in a US #6 of 2:50.26.

Van der Els of Brien McMahon made it to the top of the podium thrice with victories in the 1,000m, 1,600m and 3,200m, all with national-caliber times. The gifted senior was timed in 9:29.22 for the longest race. He finished the 1,600m in 4:21.42 and nearly broke 2:30 in the 1K with a fast time of 2:30.55.

Trumbull's Tyler Gleen moved up to No. 8 in the national rankings in the 600m with his time of 1:20.75. Greenwich's Emily Philippides won took the girls' 600m with a quick time of 1:35.42 (US #24).

Staples All American Hannah DeBalsi won her fourth straight title for 3,200m with a time of 10:44.13. She also placed as a runner-up to Rivers in the 1,600m with a 4:58.22 effort.

In the team competition, Danbury squeaked by Brien McMahon, 56-50, for the boys' title. Windsor nipped Bloomfield, 57-56, to win the girls' crown.
