Runner to Watch: Katherine DeLoreta, Tolland

The high school cross-country season officially begins next week for Connecticut athletes.

During the last few days, MileSplit CT featured the top schools from each class in the Nutmeg State. In the coming weeks, we'll highlight the individuals to keep an eye on for the upcoming 2015 campaign. Can Staples' Hannah DeBlasi finish off her outstanding career with an unprecedented fourth straight state crown? Can Tolland win its third consecutive class title and fifth straight state crown. You be the judge by some of its talented harriers who will be returning to the trails?

We begin our Runners to Watch series with the girls. Thanks to MARY ALBI for writing the bios of our athletes.

Katherine DeLoreto

Tolland, junior

DeLoreto is another strong underclassman from Tolland. The rising junior is coming off a consistent sophomore year where she finished third at the CCC Championships (19:35.19) and Class M (19:23) state meet. DeLoreto ran 19:10 at the State Open and was the top Tolland runner to cross the tape at the New England Championships (19:12).

DeLoreto had a productive spring where she was part of the Class M and State Open outdoor track teams.

At the New Balance Nationals, she ran a 5:03.19 split for the second place 4x1 mile that captured second place.

DeLoreto improved from freshman to sophomore cross country year, including a near 30 second improvement at the State Open. With the familiarity of Wickham Park, don’t be surprised if she gets near the 19 minute mark or lower this fall.
