Taking the lead from the opening gun, Spencer Brown captured the featured mile race at the ninth annual Danbury Dream Invitational on Friday night.
The Wilton senior finished with a time of 4 minutes, 12.25 seconds. He blitzed his final 400m in 59 seconds to hold off a strong challenge the last straightaway from Eric van der Els of Brien McMahon and Ridgefield's Austin Gilbert, who were second (4:13.20) and third (4:14.03), respectively. The race, which saw 10 runners dip under 4:20, was without top seed, Alex Ostberg of Darien, who rolled his ankle prior to the meet and withdrew from the competition.
It was a tight battle in the girls' 800m with Danbury's Leah Sarkisan holding off Michaela Meyer of Ponperaug with a winning time of 2:14.05. Sarkisan was timed in 2:14.06. Jon Keating of Ridgefield was the boys' 800m titlist with a 1:56.42 clocking.
