The SCC Western Sectional Championships on Thursday night produced a pair of tight battles for the team title.
Mercy held off Wilbur Cross, 110-103.5 for the girls' crown. In the boys' meet, it was Hamden squeaking out a 104-92 decision over Xavier.
Wilbur Cross junior Danae Rivers was a double-winner in the girls' competition, clocking impressive times of 2:57.35 for the 1,000-meter run and 5:00.28 for the 1,600m. She also ran a 57.67 split on the first-place 4x400m relay that was timed in 4:04.73.
Patrick Vanacore, a senior from North Haven, cracked 50-feet for the first time in his career in the shot put, taking the event with a distance of 50-2.Hamden senior Evan Walker broke the 22-foot milestone in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 22-1.5.
