It's championship time!

The championship season has begun in Connecticut with a trio of conference championships already in the books. On Tuesday, more than 1,000 runners were at Wickham Park for the Constitution State Championships. Chris Gill, a junior from Wilcox Tech, posted the fastest time among boys with a winning effort of 18 minutes, 1.5 seconds.  Capital Prep Magne defeated second-place Norwich Tech, 82-89. for the team title. Parish Hill's Sabrina Chester won the girls' race in 20:14.8. Kaynor Tech beat runner-up Wilcox Tech, 42-55, for the team crown.

Wednesday had the Naugatuck Valley League and Central Connecticut Championship meets on the docket. Kelsey Mitchell of Woodand Regional posted a winning clocking of 20:38.21 in the girls' race. With four of the top six placements, Woodland also captured the team prize with a 34-63 decision over Watertown. Dan Shumacher of Naugatuck was the boys' winner, breaking the tape in 16:12.45. Naugatuck also snared team honors with a 31-62 verdict against Woodland.

In a repeat of their 1-2 finish in the championship race of the Wickham Park Invite. William Hall's Ari Klau ran a season-best of 15:44.39 to easily capture the CCC meet over second-place finisher, Glastonbury's Randy Neish. In the team competition, Hall also defeated Glastonbury with a 40-79 decision. Haley Hasty of Rockville copped the girls' race with 19:17.16. Tolland out-scored second-place Glastonbury, 28-57, for the team hardware.
